Knowing How To Store And Transport Your LEGO® Collection Safely Is Critical For Protecting Your Investment
We all know LEGO® is made of highly durable ABS plastic, but that doesn’t mean you should shirk your responsibility of transporting them adequately — especially if you spent a fortune collecting them! And I get it, from time to time, or after your partner scolds you, you find it’s time to move them somewhere else.
Navigating this challenge can be time-consuming, but this guide will help you do it right once so you don’t have to do it again! Let’s explore the LEGO® community’s best-kept secrets to transporting your beloved sets securely.
It Is Simple To Move And Transport LEGO® If You Know What You Are Doing
Like storing LEGO® appropriately, this guide is going to follow a similar outline, with only one main difference: physical moving. We will cover that a bit further down.
Encase Your Masterpiece In A Box, Bubble Wrap, Or Plastic Wrap
First and foremost, wrap your LEGO® set (if it’s not built) with cling film or plastic wrap. This provides a layer of security to prevent scuffing of the graphics on the cardboard.
If the set is built, a cardboard box with packing peanuts will do — however, I would still recommend incasing in a small trash bag or garbage bag so any pieces that fall off don’t get mixed with the packing peanuts. You don’t want to throw any LEGO® out when you are done moving.
Lock Down Those Wandering LEGO® Pieces
Any small, loose elements that can easily come off should be placed in a resealable plastic bag or ziploc bag. This ensures that you don’t lose any small LEGO® components during the transportation process. Due yourself a favor, if there are any small pieces or points of articulation, break them off early and put them in the plastic bag.
Pad Like A Pro In Boxes Always
Fill the gaps in the cardboard box with bubble wrap, foam peanuts, or crumpled newspaper. Tisses and clothes can suffice for this part if you are transporting on a budget! This not only provides added protection but also prevents the LEGO® set from shifting during transportation and moving.
FYI, this is an incredibly necessary part!
Seal The Deal With Actual Packing Tape
Seal the box with packing tape after ensuring that your LEGO® set is securely packed inside. I used to work at a UPS Store, and clear packing tape is the best choice for cardboard boxes. Please use two long pieces to form a cross (one long to hold the pieces parallel, one across to form the cross and add support).
Do not use ducktape if you want to use the boxes again. Also, real packaging tape is a far cheaper option! Plus, you can use your keys to cut the box open after moving your LEGO®.
Tag That Box With A Label And Keep Yourself Organized
Clearly label the box with phrases like “Fragile,” “Handle with Care,” or “LEGO® Set Inside,” and the LEGO® set number helps you unpack faster and alerts anyone handling the box to take extra precautions.
Also, like myself, if you move and don’t want to unpack these immediately, the labels help you keep the LEGO® collection secure until you have time to unpack!
You Followed The Guide Now Transport Your LEGO® Collection Safely
Once you load all your boxes into your car or truck, please try to load them on top and covered with a blanket. Loading your LEGO® on top means they won’t get crushed by furniture and covering them with a blanket protects them from any damage from the sun. Remember, LEGO® is susceptible to UV-fading!
I know this guide goes a little overboard, but you can never be too careful when transporting LEGO®.
