Listen, we have all been there. You are an hour or two into a build and you can’t find that small stud you swear you just saw in the LEGO® pile. You have followed the instructions, organized the bags, and still can’t find that little piece. Let’s go over some easy ways to fix this and what to do to make sure you never miss a LEGO® piece again!
Here are some Quick tips and tricks to help you find that missing piece and get back to building:
Check The LEGO® Box Before Your Freak Out
It happens just as often as when your heart skips a beat. Sometimes, the little LEGO® piece is sitting inside the box. Grab yourself a flashlight to look inside. If you don’t care about the box, peel it open from all directions.
Look For Similar Pieces In Sets You Currently Own
Instead of spending the time searching and contacting LEGO® support, you can always substitute what you need with what you currently have. There is no shame in saving time and effort by turning to your own collection.
Check Under Furniture
Believe it or not, LEGO® pieces can sometimes roll or bounce off the table and end up on the floor or under furniture. Safely lift up furniture and/or shine a flashlight to see if the pieces feel underneath. Heck, you might find even more pieces you have misplaced from the past!
Finally, Use Online Brick Resources
LEGO® has a community of crazed, insightful, and helpful fans who are ready, willing, and able to help you on public forums and answer your questions. If you are missing a piece and can’t find it anywhere, LEGO® Support is always happy to help!

Please ensure you exhaust all efforts and save yourself time and effort before reaching out to LEGO® Support for missing pieces. I would save them as a resource to be used sparingly. LEGO® very rarely misses pieces due to the quality assurance process the manufacturing plants have in place. If your set is missing a piece, it is most likely due to (your) human error — so take a deep breath and look around for a bit before panicking.
This set here, LEGO® Classic 10717, is a bit expensive but with 1,500 brightly-colored pieces can help you fill in the gaps for existing or new sets. I always have a few trays filled with miscellaneous pieces.
