Thick Of The LEGO® Hilt Up Or Down? Both Can Be Right But There Is Only One True Answer

I am going to settle this debate quickly, and then you can decide whether to read on as to why this is the right answer: LEGO® Lightsabers are supposed to be held by their Jedi or Sith minifigures with the wider side of the hilt facing upwards! Why? Because all of LEGO® artwork illustrates the lightsabers held in this fashion.

Which Way Is Up?

Ever since the first LEGO® Star Wars set made its way to retail shelves in 1999, Jedi and Sith LEGO® minifigures have usually been pictured and portrayed with the fatter side of the hilt facing upward. Not only is this the way LEGO® illustrates it on the covers of Star Wars-themed sets, but also how LEGO® demonstrates saber position on the front of covers of its Star Wars video game franchise.

Are There Any Exceptions?

The two Star Wars characters that seem to go against this traditional modeling are LEGO® Count Dooku and LEGO® Darth Maul minifigure variants. The LEGO® hilt for Count Dooku’s minifigure seems to be symmetrical on some models as a curved hilt and therefore, can go either way. Darth Maul’s saber comes out on both ends…so it is hard to really say which side is actually up for the minifig!

LEGO® SMART Play Brings Lightsabers To Life In 2026

February 2026 marks an exciting evolution for LEGO® lightsabers with the introduction of SMART Play technology. Unveiled at CES 2026 and expanded at the Nuremberg Toy Fair, LEGO® SMART Minifigures now feature authentic lightsaber sound effects that activate during play. Sets like the 75427 Throne Room Duel & A-Wing ($159.99) include SMART versions of Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader minifigures whose lightsabers hum with authentic movie sounds when moved. The SMART Brick technology represents one of LEGO’s most significant innovations since the introduction of the minifigure itself in 1978, and the lightsaber sound effects add an entirely new dimension to Star Wars play and display. Whether you position your lightsaber hilt with the wide side up or down, SMART Play ensures the iconic weapon now sounds as legendary as it looks.

Does It Really Matter Which Way The LEGO® Lightsaber Goes?

To be quite honest with you, and all the LEGO® fans out there, no it doesn’t matter which way the LEGO® lightsaber truly goes. If you are a LEGO® purist or devout LEGO® Star Wars MOC (My Own Creation) builder, perhaps this guide was helpful to you! Whatever way the lightsaber goes, just ensure you attach the colored hilt, please.
