The fan design that became LEGO® Ideas set number 38

Home Alone started as "Home Alone. McCallister's House", a LEGO® Ideas submission by Alex Storozhuk, a 28-year-old builder from Ukraine posting as adwind. He built the first version in about a week in LEGO Digital Designer, worked from the real floor plan fans had traced from the film, and reached 10,000 supporters in ten months. LEGO approved it in the Third 2019 Review, announced on June 23, 2020, and unveiled the finished set on October 21, 2021 as the 38th Ideas release. LEGO designers Antica Bracanov and Enrique Belmonte Beixer turned the submission into the production model; Storozhuk later joined the LEGO Group's Creator 3-in-1 design team, which is not how most Ideas stories end.

At 3,955 pieces it was the largest set ever produced from an Ideas submission, a record that stood until the River Steamboat #21356 arrived in 2025 with 4,090 pieces. The 5 minifigures, Kevin, Kate, Harry, Marv and Old Man Marley, appear in no other set.

The build is the house, the tree house and the Wet Bandits' van. The walls split down the middle and swing open, the roof lifts, and each floor comes off, so the kitchen, the basement furnace with its light brick, the attic zip line, the swinging paint cans and the iron drop are all reachable. The bricks come in 24 numbered bags that follow the film's running order, which is why so many people build it one bag a night through December. Finished, the house stands about 27 cm (10.5 inches) tall, 34 cm wide and 37 cm deep.

Five years at retail and one price change

It went on sale November 1, 2021 at $249.99 and rose $50 in LEGO's August 2022 price adjustments. Today it is $299.99, or 7.6 cents per piece, below the live catalog median of 10.2 cents on our price per piece calculator. That makes 60 months on shelves so far, against a median of about 19 months for the fully retired sets in our data. Of the sets LEGO sells today, only 15 launched before this one did, and the Titanic #10294 arrived the same week with the same tracked exit.

Demand has held through all of it. 13,761 Brickset members own a copy, the 13th most-owned set still at retail, another 4,837 have it on their want list, and owners rate it 4.4 out of 5. The Heat Index sits at 96.6. Sets that keep a want list that long while anyone can walk in and buy one are usually the ones people are saving up for, and at $299.99 that is most of the explanation.

What "still available" means with the exit two years out

Brickset tracks the expected exit for December 2028, more than two full years from today, and this page refreshes from that data every night. LEGO® never confirms a date in advance, and tracked dates move in both directions as Brickset updates them, so the date is a working expectation, not a promise. For context, 27 Ideas sets are on sale right now and 10 of them are expected to leave in the December 2026 wave, including the Grand Piano #21323 that launched the year before this one. Home Alone is not among them.

The practical catch is seasonal. This is a Christmas set, so most of a year's sales happen in a few weeks, and "in stock" in July and "in stock" in the second week of December are different things at LEGO.com. If it is on your list for this year, the buying window is November, when Insiders points promotions and the holiday gift-with-purchase offers also land. If it is on your list for some other year, the calendar says you have time. That is a statement about availability, not about what a sealed copy might be worth later; we do not forecast that here.
