Every LEGO® fan has an opinion about which sets are the most coveted. I wanted a number. So I built one. The Baumlinks Heat Index scores every one of the 23,108 sets in our database by real collector demand, using the want lists and own lists that hundreds of thousands of members maintain on Brickset. No vibes, no guesswork, just demand you can count.
What does the top of the chart look like? Retired legends, mostly. Sets like Cafe Corner and the original Ultimate Collector's Millennium Falcon went out of production years ago, and the number of people who want one has only grown since. That gap between wanting and owning is exactly what the Heat Index measures.
How the Heat Index works (the actual formula)
Heat score = wantedBy × ( wantedBy ÷ ( wantedBy + ownedBy ) )
In plain English: how many collectors want the set, multiplied by the share of interested collectors who are still waiting to get one. A set 10,000 people want but only 2,000 own burns much hotter than a set 10,000 people want and 50,000 already have.
We then convert that raw score to a 0–100 percentile across every set with a meaningful sample (at least 100 owners and 25 wanters on Brickset, roughly 16,000 sets). A Heat Index of 99.0 means the set out-demands 99% of everything LEGO® has ever sold. Want/own counts come from the Brickset community and refresh nightly.

What is the Baumlinks Heat Index?
It is a 0–100 demand score we compute for every LEGO® set, based on how many Brickset members want a set versus how many own it. The formula is published in full on this page: want count times want share, converted to a percentile. A Heat Index of 99 means the set out-demands 99% of all sets ever tracked.
Why are most of the top 50 retired sets?
Because retirement freezes supply while demand keeps growing. A set like Cafe Corner stopped production in 2009, so every year more collectors discover it and fewer sealed copies exist. Currently-available sets rarely crack the very top because anyone who wants one can simply buy it.
How often does the Heat Index update?
Want and own counts refresh from the Brickset API nightly, and scores are recomputed with each refresh. The data-updated date at the bottom of this page tells you exactly how fresh the numbers are.
Is a high Heat Index a reason to buy a set?
It is a reason to pay attention, nothing more. The Heat Index measures collector demand, not future value, and this page is not financial advice. If a set you love runs hot and is approaching retirement, that is worth knowing. Check the retirement tracker and make your own call.
